On How To Be Esplinesque-Finding Your Passion (And Never Letting Go)

If one is to be Esplinesque, one absolutely must have a passion. I believe that a person without a passion is lost in a frightful world without a sail or a compass--like that compass Capt. Jack Sparrow has. Over the years I have amassed a menagerie of retro objects such as a Diana F+ camera that takes real film, a bright red record player along with some pretty sweet records, and a stunningly beautiful Olympia Typewriter my wonderful father got me for Christmas a year or two ago. It may sound like I'm bragging and that would be because I am, but it is my guess that none of you could care less or begin to understand the great love I have for these objects. I have a passion for everyday life in the 1940 and 50's, plain and simple. I find new things every day as well. There is my love of the sport of fencing and even more recently my love of Agatha Christie's mystery novels, but they will have their own posts in time. They are also symbols that have a very personal to me that only I can understand, and I have been reminded of this fact many times over the years by my family and friends. There is a special place in my heart that lights up whenever I think upon my "obsessions", a feeling that I wish I could convey to you, but alas I fear I cannot do it justice.

I charge you to find a passion of your own. In order to help you along, ask yourself these questions: What era of art do I find most pleasing to the eye? Maybe I like retro advertisements or maybe religious pieces from the renaissance (ren-EH-sanse)? What style of music do I most enjoy? What is my favorite country or state? Is there a language I have always wanted to learn (that's another post, as well)? I wish you happy hunting and the most success in your own personal quest for a passion of your own. If you already have one, feel free to leave a comment or a short story about it. Bonne nuit mes amis!
